Example Your Year Outside print: six route shapes in a grid under the year, with the year’s distance, ascent and days out

A year outside, on one print

Around the end of the year, most of us look back. The first run after the clocks went forward. The walk that turned into a soaking. The ride you nearly didn’t finish, and the one you still talk about. On their own they’re just activities in an app. Put together, they’re a year.

Your Year Outside puts them on one print.

What it is

The Your Year Outside print takes the GPX files from your runs, walks and rides, up to 100 of them, and draws every route. You add your name, up to three highlights from the year in your own words, and your totals: distance, elevation gain, days out and hours.

You see the finished print before you pay, so you can check every route, label and figure first.

A mosaic or one map?

There are two ways to lay it out.

  • A mosaic gives each route its own square, labelled with its date and distance, on light or dark paper. It’s the one to choose if your year was spread across different places: a race in one city, a holiday walk somewhere else, the loop from your front door.
  • One map puts every route together on a single Ordnance Survey map. It works best when most of your year happened in one area, and the lines start to build up over the places you go back to.

Choosing your days

It doesn’t have to be every activity you recorded. Most people pick the ones that meant something: the races, the long days, the firsts, the trips away, and one or two ordinary loops that stand for all the others. Twenty routes can tell a year as well as a hundred.

A few things worth including:

  • the race or challenge you trained all year for
  • a first: a first ultra, a first fell race, a first long ride
  • a walk with someone who matters
  • a holiday route somewhere new
  • the run or ride you did more than any other

Getting the files

You’ll need a GPX file for each route. Most apps let you export one from the activity’s menu: Strava, Garmin Connect, Komoot, OS Maps and most watches can all do it. Our GPX help page shows where to find it, app by app.

Two tips if you’re adding a lot of routes:

  • Export them into one folder as you go, then add them all at once.
  • If an app gives you a FIT or TCX file, export the same activity again and choose GPX. They hold the same route, but the print needs GPX.

We add up the distance and ascent from your files. You can change the totals before you order, or clear any you’d rather leave off.

As a gift

A year of someone else’s routes is a lovely thing to give, but it needs their files, which is hard to get without asking. Two ways round it:

  • Give a gift card. You choose the amount and the day it arrives by email, and they choose their days and make the print themselves.
  • If you shared most of the year, a partner or a training friend, make it of the days you did together, from your own files.

If it’s for Christmas, check our delivery page for the timings before you order.

Questions people ask

How many routes can I include?

Up to 100 on one print. It doesn’t need to be every activity: pick the days that made your year.

What file do I need?

A GPX file for each route. Most running, cycling and mapping apps can export one, and our GPX help page shows where to find it.

Can I change the totals?

Yes. We add up the distance and ascent from your files, and you can change the totals, clear any you’d rather leave off, and add up to three highlights in your own words.

Does it have to be this year?

No. Choose any year for the heading and add the routes from it. A first year of running or a year you’ll never forget works just as well as the one just gone.

Do you deliver outside the UK?

Not at the moment. We deliver to UK addresses only, and delivery is free and tracked.
